The Ultimate Badlands National Park Day Trip
If you’ve ever dreamed of exploring a place that feels like another planet—jagged peaks, sprawling prairies, and painted landscapes that shift color with the sun—Badlands National Park should be at the top of your list. I recently spent the most magical 24 hours in the park and wanted to share my favorite one-day itinerary for making the most of your time in this wildly underrated national treasure.
Whether you're road-tripping through South Dakota or building a full trip around the park, here’s how I recommend soaking up the best of the Badlands—complete with sunrise views, wildlife sightings, and a whole lot of jaw-dropping scenery.
🌙 CAMPING: Home Base at Cedar Pass Campground
There’s nothing quite like waking up in the heart of the Badlands—and Cedar Pass Campground is the perfect spot to do it. Tucked inside the park, this peaceful campground lets you fall asleep under a blanket of stars and wake to the golden glow lighting up the rock formations just beyond your tent. It’s quiet, grounding, and perfectly placed for sunrise adventures. Plus, with flush toilets and walkable access to the Cedar Pass Lodge, restaurant, and visitor center, it’s kind of like luxury (but still rugged) camping. With 96 sites and sweeping views of the surrounding prairie, Cedar Pass makes a dreamy basecamp for your Badlands experience.
🌄 SUNRISE: Big Badlands Overlook
Set your alarm, pour that coffee to go, and get ready for some serious sunrise magic. The Big Badlands Overlook is hands down one of the best spots in the park to catch the first light of day—think soft pinks, purples, and golden hues washing over the formations. It’s quiet, peaceful, and totally surreal before the crowds roll in. You’ll feel like you have the whole place to yourself. And if you're camping at Cedar Pass? You're just a short 10-minute drive away from this unforgettable start to the day!
🥾 HIKE: Castle Trail to Medicine Root Loop (8 Miles RT)
After sunrise, it’s time to lace up your boots and hit one of my favorite trails in the park. The Castle Trail to Medicine Root Loop makes for the perfect moderate day hike—taking you through towering rock spires, wide-open prairie, and rugged terrain that feels like stepping into another world. Keep an eye out for cliff swallows swooping along the rock walls—these little birds are fast, but so fun to spot!
Pro Tip: This trail offers zero shade, so start early to beat the heat and pack plenty of water. I always throw on my Cotopaxi Sombra Sun Shirt for hikes like this—it’s light, breathable, and gives me just the right amount of sun protection without overheating. Trust me, your skin will thank you.
🐾 MIDDAY STOP: Prairie Dog Town
Is it even a trip to the Badlands without a stop at Prairie Dog Town? These little guys are endlessly entertaining, and watching them pop in and out of their burrows is pure joy. It's a quick stop, but a must. Take a few minutes to observe their quirky little ecosystem—just don’t feed them (for their safety and yours).
🦬 WILDLIFE WATCHING: Buffalo in the Grasslands
Driving through the park’s grasslands, keep your eyes peeled for one of the park’s most majestic residents: the American Bison. I spotted several grazing in the distance and it honestly took my breath away. Give them plenty of space and observe from a safe distance—these gentle giants are incredible to see in their natural habitat.
🌅 SUNSET: The Door Trail (1 Mile RT)
To wrap up the day, head to The Door Trail for sunset. It’s a short, easy walk out into the formations, and the view as the sun dips below the horizon is next-level stunning. The colors, the stillness, the feeling of standing in the middle of millions of years of geologic history—it’s the perfect closing chapter to your Badlands adventure.
☀️ A Friendly Reminder
The Badlands are stunning—but they’re also sunny, dry, and very exposed, especially in the summer. A little prep goes a long way toward keeping you safe and comfortable out there:
Hydrate like a pro. Bring more water than you think you’ll need, and consider adding electrolytes (I’m a big fan of LMNT) to help you stay energized and balanced.
Sunscreen is non-negotiable. Reapply throughout the day—my go-to is Sun Bum for its reef-safe ingredients and yummy smell.
Bring your favorite hat (bonus points if it’s wide-brimmed) for extra sun protection.
Layer up in the morning. Sunrise hikes can be chilly, even in the summer months.
Pay attention to how you’re feeling. Take breaks in the shade when you can—there are lots of picnic areas with covered tables perfect for a rest or snack break!
Final Thoughts
One day in Badlands National Park can feel like a full adventure if you do it right—and this itinerary checks all the boxes: epic views, quiet trails, wildlife encounters, and plenty of time to soak it all in. Whether you’re road-tripping through the west or planning a special getaway, the Badlands are wild, wonderful, and so worth the visit.
